The Maritime Law Association of the United States is pleased to announce that its Past President, Francis X. Nolan III, has just been elected to serve a three year term on the Executive Council of the Comite Maritime International (CMI), based in Antwerp, Belgium. The election took place at CMI’s Colloquium 2023 in Montreal, Canada.

CMI of which MLA is a constituent member was founded in 1897 in order “to contribute by all appropriate means and activities to the unification of maritime law in all its aspects.” Mr. Nolan himself is a Titulary Member of CMI and has been actively involved in CMI’s uniformity efforts since 1985, most recently on CMI’s International Working Group on Judicial Sales of Vessels. He also served as Legal Advisor to the US State Department in the negotiation of the United Nations Convention on the International Effects of Judicial Sales of Ships, adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 7, 2022.

The MLA encourages its members to contribute to uniformity efforts and to take leadership roles using their specialized expertise.
