TULANE ADMIRALTY LAW INSTITUTE AND MARITIME LAW ASSOCIATION’S 50-YEAR REUNION
October 26, 2016 @ 8:00 am - October 28, 2016 @ 5:00 pm
As you probably know, this fall we will be celebrating a significant milestone in the history of the Maritime Law Association of the United States. Fifty years ago, Benjamin W. Yancey of New Orleans was elected President of the Association, the first non-New Yorker to serve in that capacity, and that fall, we had our first meeting outside of New York City in Mr. Yancey’s home town. That meeting was an immense success, and led to our practice of having our fall meetings in resorts and port cities around the country, bringing the MLA closer to its members. I think that most of you who have attended these fall meetings will attest to the fact that these meetings contribute greatly to the camaraderie that is the hall mark of the MLA. In celebration of that meeting, we will be returning to New Orleans on October 26-28 for our annual fall meeting.
That first “out port” meeting in New Orleans in 1966 was held in conjunction with the first Tulane Admiralty Law Institute, and the Institute will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in conjunction with our annual fall meeting. Below you will find links to the program brochure, general information for the Institute, MLA Fall 2016 Meetings and Events Schedule-Updated 10-6-16, online registration information, and information about three, special discounted tours for MLA members (a Daytime Jazz Cruise, your choice of two Plantation Tours, and a Super City Tour). As you will note, on Wednesday and Thursday mornings, there will be Institute sessions at the New Orleans Board of Trade in the Central Business District, followed by MLA committee meetings at the Board of Trade and local law firms. CLE will be offered at the MLA committee meetings. On Friday we will be out at the Tulane campus for the final sessions of the Institute and the MLA General Meeting.
As one would expect in “The City that Care Forgot,” there will be some exceptional social events. On Wednesday night, there will be a cocktail reception at the Cabildo on Jackson Square catered by Galatoire’s, and on Friday night there will be a closing dinner at the Audubon Tea Room in Audubon Park across St. Charles Avenue from Tulane.
One can attend all of the events by registering for the Institute, and I highly encourage you to do so. However, as is always the case with our meetings, one can attend all of the MLA committee meetings without charge. One can also attend the Wednesday night reception and/or the Friday night dinner by paying separately for those events. Registration for all events must be made through Tulane, even if you are not attending the Institute.
I truly hope that you will join us in New Orleans to celebrate this milestone in our history.
Best regards,
Harold K. Watson
President
