TIME TO VOTE – Accession of the United States to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (“Convention”) [RESENDING LINKS)
Dear Committee Members:
Our president Farrell has sought the view of the Carriage of Goods Committee regarding the
MLA’s position on accession of the United States to the United Nations Convention on the Law
of the Sea (“Convention”). In turn, I request that each member cast a vote in favor or against the
MLA’s recommendation to the Administration that the Convention be adopted.
By way of background, in May 2012, then President Parrish expressed the MLA’s support of the
U.S. joining the Convention. There are recent developments involving climate change, the Arctic
sea passage and in the South China Sea which President Farrell believes provide further support
for the U.S.’ accession.
A copy of the Convention text can be found athttps://

For highlights of the Convention go to- https://www.un.org
And President Parrish’s 2012 letter to the Foreign Relations Committee is posted in the
Documents section of our Committee’s web page.
Please participate by clicking on the below voting link and cast your vote no later than February
11, 2021. The results will be tabulated and forwarded to President Farrell. Thank you.
